This popular jazz camp is uniquely tailored to introduce, inspire, and advance the varied experiences, knowledge, and skill sets of vocalists and instrumentalists in the performance of Jazz, the original American musical artform.
Campers enjoy informative sessions in jazz improv, history, fundamentals, stylistic interpretation, repertoire, solo and ensemble musicianship, and more, working with highly regarded jazz artists of international performance backgrounds, experienced in middle school to collegiate and pro level mentoring. The week culminates with a Friday 4pm Camper/Pro Faculty Showcase Concert, free to the community, of combos, vocalists, and 2 big bands, beginner and advanced. Fun, challenging, rewarding, students prep for Fall back-to-school music programs, teachers learn great concepts in teaching jazz, musicians, novice to pro, take their skills to the next level!

NOTE: Instrumentalists need to be able to read music and play their instruments proficiently enough to play in a big band setting. Vocalists do not need to read music to participate, but will be performing in a soloist (not choral) setting

Camp Director, Vocals, Combo
Eight-time Downbeat Magazine award winning vocalist, composer, arranger, Lisa is regarded among today’s true jazz vocal song stylists, performing regionally to internationally in jazz clubs, for jazz societies, major venues and festivals, including the Kennedy Center, Vienna State Opera House, the Van Wezel, the Montreux, North Sea, and Pescara Jazz Festival. She has been the featured vocalist with the Larry Elgart Orchestra, St. Johns River City Band, UNF JE 1, and appeared with Arturo Sandoval, Danny Gottlieb, Jane Monheit, and Ed Calle. With a B.M and M.M. in jazz studies from UNF, Lisa has taught music theory and vocal jazz at LaVilla Middle and Douglas Anderson High SOTA, interim at UNF, has been a popular artist/clinician for music programs, and maintained a private vocal studio. Profiled in the 2010 book, “The New Face of Jazz,” inducted into the 2013 Jacksonville Jazz Festival “Hall of Fame,” she co-leads music groups with trumpeter JB Scott. www.kellyscottmusic.com

Music Director, Reeds, Vanguard Band
Dir. of Jazz Studies at Douglas Anderson High SOTA, Don directs the jazz bands, other ensembles, teaches saxophone and other music courses. A prior director of Fine & Performing Arts for 12 years at Bolles School, music professor at Valdosta State University, FCCJ, and UNF, a middle and high school band director in Ga and FL, Don and his bands have won consecutive superior ratings and recognitions. A much in demand music educator, clinician, adjudicator, guest band directors, he is a “go to” source in jazz, concert band, and all things music education. Don has published numerous articles and served high offices in regarded music organizations. A Keilwerth Saxophone Signature Artist since 1995, he performs in the Jacksonville Symphony, in off-Broadway shows and musicals, and with popular groups. A past director of the St. Johns River City jazz and brass bands, he has played on many bands with major artists. He is the 2017 Jacksonville Jazz Festival “Hall of Fame” Inductee. www.zentz.org.

From Phil, P.A, the first graduate of the UNF Jazz Program under Rich Matteson, JB then earned his masters degree at FIU studying with Arturo Sandoval. He toured with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Ringling Bros Barnum & Bailey Circus (Japan), and led the famed Dukes of Dixieland in New Orleans that was featured on the PBS special “A Salute to Jelly Roll Morton” and with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall. He has performed with legends Al Hirt, Paquito D’Rivera, Jeff Hamilton, Lynn Seaton, and Tim Hagans. Assoc Prof teaching trumpet, JB is the Coord of the Jazz Studies at UNF, of the Great American Jazz Series, and award-winning UNF JE 1. A Warburton Signature Artist, popular adjudicator, artist/clinician, profiled in the book, “The New Face of Jazz,” and is the 2017 Jacksonville Jazz Festival “Hall of Fame” Inductee.

Camp Coordinator, Blue Note Band
Director at The Covenant School of Jacksonville, Jim is a widely respected musical pedagogue, among a rare breed of music educators. With thirty-five years of mentoring in Jacksonville, Florida, he has taught at Jacksonville University, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, as a founding teacher for Landon Middle School of the Arts and LaVilla School of the Arts, KIPP Impact Middle School, First Baptist Academy, and as the founding director of The First Coast Community Music School. Many of his students have gone on to major careers in music. Jim is also an active performing trumpet artist.

Piano, Rhythm
From Oregon, Doug studied music at the University of Oregon, was a graduate of the UNF Jazz Program under Rich Matteson. He was the founding piano program director and teacher for Landon Middle SOTA, then the acclaimed LaVilla Middle SOTA, on staff there since 2000. Many of his students have gone on to attend Douglas Anderson High SOTA, UNF, Julliard, music conservatories, and to pro careers, some winning Grammy Awards. A popular pro pianist of jazz, rock, and pop styles in the southeast for over 30 years, he has performed and recorded with many artists and groups including the former St. Johns River City Band, the Lisa Kelly jazz groups, and as co-leader for 20 years of the group, The Committee. He has appeared with notables Louie Bellson, Randy Brecker, Dizzy Gillespie, Branford Marsalis, James Moody, Maceo Parker, Percy Sledge, Dennis Yost. Doug is a staff pianist, composer and arranger for many years with the Dynamic Les DeMerle bands, has had several of his compositions and arrangements featured on the recordings of various artists, and is a familiar artist performing at the Amelia Island Jazz Festival.
