The arts play a vital role in classical, Christian education at The Covenant School of Jacksonville.
Our scholars’ hearts and minds are directed to seeking and appreciating God’s truth, His goodness, and His beauty. Covenant cultivates a love and appreciation for His beauty through exposure to beautiful music, visual arts, dance, and drama that includes discovering and refining scholars’ own giftedness in these arts.
As scholars experience beauty through the fine arts, they gain a deeper love and appreciation for God – the One who created beauty and represents beauty, Himself.
One of the ways in which we can glorify God is through the hearing, singing, and/or performing of music. That’s why at Covenant, arts is a vital part of our classical, Christian educational program.
Covenant’s faculty are experienced artists in their fields who are equipped with the hearts and minds to cultivate a love for the performing arts and appreciation of the beauty of it. As early as preschool, our scholars attend music class each week where they learn hymns and other vocal selections providing the foundation on which to build.
In the grammar stage, scholars study the attributes of composers and artists and are introduced to skills that afford several opportunities to make their own music and art. In the logic stage, scholars are able to select instrumental, choral, theatre, or dance, with each selection broadening their understanding of that particular art. In choir and band, they are introduced to multi-part music and musicianship. In drama and dance, they are introduced to the basic core elements of the art and build upon those elements through the middle school years. In the rhetoric stage, scholars transition to the advanced level and bring their understanding of composers, notes, lyrics, acts, themes, and strokes of various artists to life while performing or drawing their own art using attributes practiced by the original artists.
PERFORMING ARTS
Another way in which we can glorify God is through the appreciation and creation of visual art. Through the study of visual arts, scholars gain a deeper understanding and love for The Creator, The Artist - God.
As early as preschool, our scholars learn to appreciate various works of art and learn about the artists and their craft.
As the progress through the grammar, logic, and rhetoric stages of learning, they learn line, shape, form, space, pattern, texture, value, and color are the elements discovered in beautiful art.
